The need to accompany tank divisions with quickly moving infantry divisions to exploit breaches created by tanks in the enemy front, led to the development of specialised vehicles able to manoeuvre on all types of terrain. A vehicle “family” was developed in Germany under the abbreviated name Sd.Kfz.251, which gave German troops the necessary protection and mobility. This vehicles was able to transport an entire infantry division complete with accompanying arms, while offering a degree of protection through its light armour.
